SPORT SPECIALIST: SHSM
What High Skills Major (SHSM) in Sport?
An SHSM allows students to customize their high school experience to fit career interests. Offered in Grade 11 and 12, an SHSM allows students to receive a specialized high school diploma. A SHSM program enables students to gain sector-specific skills and knowledge in the context of engaging, career-related learning environments and helps them focus on graduation and on pursuing their postsecondary goals.
A bundle of 9 credits in Grade 11 and 12 that includes:
- 4 SPORTS MAJOR CREDITS
- 2 COOPERATIVE EDUCATION CREDITS, and
- 3 OTHER COURSES (from English, Math, Science, Humanities, Business/Technology, Art)
Unique Program Features:
- Students can receive up to 7 SPORTS-SECTOR RELATED CERTIFICATIONS Examples: Standard First Aid, CPR Level C, AED, WHMIS, Sports Taping, Coaching & Leadership, Officiating, and more! (AT NO COST)
- Experiential Learning and Career Exploration in the Sports Field:
Examples: Job shadowing opportunities and field trips to University/College programs, Fitness Oriented Field Trips, Rock Climbing, Self Defense, Paddling, and More! - Reach Ahead Activities:
Examples: University of Waterloo Kinesiology Lab Days, MLSE Career Forum (Marlies & TFC), Raptors 905 Career Forum, University of Waterloo Anatomy Lab Discovery Trip
Pursuing a SHSM enables students to:
- discover the relationship between school and careers
- customize their secondary school education to suit specific interests and talents
- hear and see first hand what a career in the sector feels and looks like
- develop specialized knowledge and skills that are valued by the sector and postsecondary educational institutions
- earn credits that are recognized by the sector and post-secondary educational institutions
- gain sector-specific, industry-recognized and career-relevant certifications and training
- develop Essential Skills and work habits that are valued by the sector and recorded using the tools in the Ontario Skills Passport (OSP)
- identify, explore and refine career goals and make informed decisions about their post-secondary destination
- remain flexible, with the option to shift between pathways, should their goals and plans change
- gain confidence their ability to succeed
- network with post-secondary institutions, local industries and businesses
- open doors for summer jobs and future employment opportunities
SHSM Coop
Experiential learning is one of the most valuable aspects of the SHSM program.
Co-Op can be completed during grade 11 (recommended), in the summer between grade 11 and 12, or in grade 12. Placements are determined with the Co-Op teacher and must be related to the Sports-Sector.
It is not mandatory to be enrolled in Co-Op to be part of the SHSM program. However, students must complete at least 2 credits of Co-Op to attain their SHSM Red Seal.
